Oatmeal, where have you been all my life?

Posted on

I’ve recently  rediscovered oatmeal. I was never really a fan because the only oatmeal I had ever tried was the instant microwavable kind. I was always lured to the boxes of apple cinnamon oatmeal on the cereal aisle (I love anything with that flavor combination). But every time I brought it home and made it, I never liked the texture. So I gave up on oatmeal. I just thought I didn’t like it. But one day at work, on my ten minute break, I decided to have some. It was still the quick cooking kind but I made it with milk instead of water and added brown sugar. It wasn’t half bad, it was a little soupy for my liking but it wasn’t gross.

I’m sure  you remember from a couple posts ago that I made oatmeal glazed cookies for Valentine’s Day, well I did too. So I knew I had rolled oats at home, all I needed now was to learn how to make it without a microwave. That sounds so sad right? Normally I would look on the box for a recipe (almost all oatmeal’s have recipes right on the box) but I used organic rolled oats that came in a non re-sealable bag so I stashed the leftover in a canister. So I just googled it. What I have found that works for me is one part oats, two parts liquid. I don’t own a microwave so I made mine on the stove top. When you make oatmeal “the old fashion way” you can really get it to the consistency that you like. I got really excited because it was so good, I couldn’t believe I was actually liking oatmeal.

Oatmeal is so good for you. I knew it was, but I didn’t know the specifics. Here’s some info:

  • oatmeal may help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease
  • oatmeal may reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes
  • oats are 100% natural
  • oatmeal contains a wide array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and is a good source of protein, complex carbohydrates and iron.

Not to mention, its cheap and you can make a million flavor combinations and it’s so filling!

If anyone has any oatmeal recipes or interesting ideas for oatmeal please let me know.

Single serving of Oatmeal:

1/2 cup old fashioned oats

1 cup milk or water

brown sugar, cinnamon, blueberries (any flavor you want!)

In a sauce pan over med-low heat combine the oats and liquid. Once a simmer is reached this is when I add the brown sugar and cinnamon. Of course if you prefer you can add all flavor additions at the end. If you are using milk, I recommend stirring continuously. Heat until desired texture is met. Top with fruit (or not) and enjoy!
